Convert From L to P License
Making the transition from L plates (learner) to P plates (provisional) is a major milestone in any driver’s life. It’s exhilarating, but let’s be honest—it can also be overwhelming. Learner Licence
Learner driver’s license (L plates)
You must be at least 16 years old to apply for your learner license.
Pass the Driver Knowledge Test (DKT)
Once you have your learner license, you must display L plates (a black “L” on a yellow background) on the front and rear of your vehicle when driving.
Learners have 4 demerit points.
Learner License Conditions
- Always be supervised by a fully licensed driver.
- Display L plates clearly on your vehicle.
- Adhere to the maximum speed limit of 90 km/h.
- Zero alcohol limit while driving.
- Log at least 120 hours of supervised driving (including 20 hours of night driving) if you're under 25 years old, using the logbook or the digital logbook app.
P1 License Test
- Meet the Requirements
- Minimum age: You need to be at least 17 years old to take the driving test for a P1 license.
- Learner hours: You must complete the required number of supervised driving hours (120 hours in NSW, including 20 hours of night driving) recorded in your logbook.
- Hold L plates for the required period: Depending on the state, you must hold your learner license for a specific amount of time (usually 12 months).
- Hazard Perception Test (HPT)
- In some states like NSW, you must pass the Hazard Perception Test (HPT) before taking the driving test. This computer-based test assesses your ability to recognize and respond to road hazards.
Key Driving Skills to Perfect
There are certain skills you’ll need to sharpen to ensure you pass the test. Here’s a quick rundown:
- Speed Control: Always follow speed limits, especially in school zones and residential areas. Mukhi Driving School instructors will help you develop the habit of adjusting speed as necessary.
- Parking: Whether it’s parallel parking or reversing into a space, make sure you’re hitting the mark every time. We give you plenty of parking practice so you’ll feel comfortable and precise.
- Observational Skills: Constantly checking your mirrors and blind spots is crucial. You’ll need to show the examiner that you’re aware of everything happening around you.
- Indicator Usage: Properly signal before turning or changing lanes. Make it a habit to use indicators well in advance.
- Smooth Driving: Keep your maneuvers smooth and controlled—no sharp braking or sudden turns.
- Driving Mock test with Mukhi driving School
We assess your driving skills just like the actual test, using the relevant RMS test route. You’ll receive a score indicating whether you are ready for your license. We shall then advise you of where you need to improve and a training plan is set accordingly.
Book and Pass the Driving Test
- Book the test: You’ll need to book a driving test with your local transport authority.
- On test day: Bring your learner license, logbook, and any required forms or identification.
- Driving Test preparation: Mukhi Driving School fully prepare you for your practical driving test. We will help you build up your confidence before the test and give you proper guidance to improve your driving skills. We will teach you all the skills required for manoeuvres such as kerb side stopping, three-point turn and parallel reverse parking as per the actual RMS driving test requirements and assessment.
After the Test
If you pass, congratulations! You’ll receive your P1 (Red P plates) license. Keep in mind P-plate restrictions like a 90 km/h speed limit and a zero alcohol policy, Limits on the number of passengers at night (depending on state rules). P1 have 4 demerit points.
P2 Licence
After holding your P1 for 18 months, you can upgrade to your P2 license. This stage lasts for 24 months, and while the restrictions are generally lighter than the P1 Licence, you’ll still have to adhere to certain rules like the zero BAC limit. P2 licenses have 7 demerits points.
Full (Unrestricted) License
Once you’ve completed the required time on your P2 license, you’re finally eligible to apply for your full license. With this, all restrictions are lifted, and you’ll have the freedom of being a fully licensed driver in NSW. A full license has 13 demerit points.
